DESCRIPTION:NAfSA will be leading a virtual mentorship program and hackathon/workshop for Youth in Somalia going through a digital upskilling bootcamp in collaboration with the International Council for Refugees and Immigrants and our Georgia State University partner. This is part of our Youth Displacement project\, through the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, with the generous sponsorship of the Consulate General of The Kingdom of the Netherlands. \nThe program will bring together Atlanta area professionals and students in the Tech/STEM field to share their experience and guide the learning of these youth in order to supplement their 12 week bootcamp. \n\nThe Somali Youth mentees will have an opportunity to ask questions and get wonderful advice to help them ensure they can visualize how to utilize their training or learn about other areas of interest to explore in the future.\nMentors (collegiate and professionals) will get a chance to pay it forward and provide an opportunity to also grow their leadership and mentorship skills.\n\nLogistics: \n\nTwo 1hr mentorship sessions will occur each month\, one with Collegiate students as mentors and the other with Professionals as mentors\nA 3hr workshop/hackathon with guidance from both students and professionals will occur once in late Feb and once in mid April.\n\nIf you are interested in being a mentor\,  please use the link below to register for the info session and sign up for the program! Young people will provide perspectives into their research approaches while seeking the audience’s contribution.\n\n\nAbstract: The Race towards a Green(er) Economy: Examining the Contested Futures of Sustainable Development in the Congo \nAs the conditions of the climate crisis give rise to a clean energy transition\, multinational corporations have begun the scramble for a piece of the global critical mining market. 70% of the world’s cobalt is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Despite its vast natural resources\, more than 70% of the DRC’s population lives in extreme poverty\, with high rates of child malnutrition and major infrastructure deficits. Commonly dubbed the “poverty paradox”\, the DRC has experienced decades of violent conflict and political instability resulting in over six million deaths since 1996. With global clean energy demands requiring at least double the mining capacity by 2035\, questions of resource extraction and ecological sustainability seem to be at odds. In this paper\, I explore the interrelation between multinational corporations (MNCs) and nation-states in extractive economies\, namely critical mineral production in the DRC. To do so\, I will present a historical overview of the concept of sustainable development from when it was first launched at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 to the subsequent trend of corporate and state-led sustainability reports across central Africa. Through a critical analysis of “sustainable development” through a case study on copper production and the political economy structures of the DRC over the last twenty years\, I seek to make an important intervention on external actors in the race towards a “greener economy”. With the average age of the DRC population being 16 years old\, I assert that the sustainable policy recommendations must consider and center the future of youth employment in green sectors of the mining economy as corporations look to increase production capacity. Young people will provide perspectives into their research approaches while seeking the audience’s contribution.\n\n\nAbstract: Leveraging Climate Finance for Peacebuilding in Conflict-Affected States \nClimate change and armed conflicts are two of the most pressing global challenges of our time. When these crises intersect\, the consequences can be catastrophic. Heatwaves during wars\, or heavy rainfall causing power outages in hospitals\, are no longer hypothetical scenarios but real challenges faced by conflict-affected states globally. This study examines the role of climate finance in enhancing peace\, with a focus on integrating conflict impacted communities into the early planning stages of climate-centered initiatives. We utilize data from the Berkeley Carbon Trading Project and World Bank reports on foreign direct investment to compare climate finance in conflict-affected states with more stable regions. Our analysis reveals that conflict-affected states often receive insufficient climate finance\, with fewer projects approved and fewer credits generated. Specifically focusing on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan\, we delve into these countries’ priorities during international and regional climate negotiations\, such as the US Africa Leaders’ Summit and the Africa Climate Summit\, revealing trends in negotiations and investments. We also look at Case studies such as USAID’s Health Electrification and Treatment Enhancement (HETA) program in DRC and South Sudan\, the Matebe Hydroelectric plant in DRC\, and other Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects as prime examples of tackling both climate and peace goals. Our findings suggest that strategic climate finance schemes can facilitate dual benefits of environmental sustainability and peacebuilding\, which we term ‘peace co-benefits’ in this paper. With the world’s largest free trade area and a 1.2-billion-person market\, Africa by creating an entirely new development path\, harnessing the potential of its resources and people proves every day that development is not a monolith. However\, as it experiences this growth technology remains a challenging sector for economic growth in Africa. The lag in the technology sector imposes a limit on innovation\, productivity\, and competitiveness. Venture Capital (VC)—professionally managed capital invested in private ventures—has historically been a driving force for the growth of leading global companies because it provides the necessary funds for technological advancements and innovation. Between 1980 and 2020\, 39 percent of Initial Public Offering were venture-backed\, and major firms such as Apple\, Microsoft\, and Amazon benefited from VC support. While VC has played a pivotal role in fostering economic development in established economies such as the United States\, its potential impact on African countries remains underexplored.
