Uniting Africans and African Descent People in the Diaspora

Recap of HBCU Homecoming Media Launch in DC, June 2019

NOBODY DOES HOMECOMING BETTER THAN HBCUs... you can quote us on that. So why not have a bigger better homecoming… to Africa?

To commemorate 400 years after the first enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo declared 2019 as the “Year of return for African Diaspora”. This announcement created a lot of spark in African Descendants in the Diaspora to travel back to Africa, specifically to Ghana from 1st to 10th August 2019.

One of the initiatives is being led by Kwabena Boateng of the African Diaspora Nation, to bridge the gap with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) students, alumni and leaders in the USA. They held the HBCU Homecoming Media launch at the African Union Mission office in Washington, DC on June 10th, 2019. The event brought together high-profile leaders in the black community including HBCU Presidents, US Government Advisors, students, corporate representatives and public personalities such as Roland Martin.

During the media launch, Ambassador Arikana Chihombori Quao shared a history lesson that dissects ‘The Legacy Of Colonization and how it affects us now. Which made us think deeply, “are African countries truly independent even though we celebrate our Independence Days?”

At the end of the event our Executive Director, Ken, had a chat with Ambassador Quao and she pledged her support for the unity of the African Students in the diaspora (ASA). She also called to action the bringing together of ASA leaders for a conference in DC soon. Stay connected with us for more info on this over the next few months.
