Member Recognition – Point System

Together we can
We win together

Member Recognition Program Overview & Highlights

NAfSA recognizes and values the powerful work our community is leading across campuses and the world. From cultural programming and community service to mentorship and career development, our members are shaping the future of African diaspora leadership. Elevating and celebrating that impact is central to our mission of showcasing and/or developing conscious, action-oriented leaders.

Our Member Recognition Program makes that impact visible through our Chapter Point System. Chapters and individual members earn points for meaningful engagement across NAfSA’s core pillars, leading to monthly recognitions like Chapter of the Month and culminating in annual honors such as Regional Awards and Chapter of the Year. The system is structured to ensure fairness, giving both large and small chapters a real opportunity to be recognized.

More than awards, this program fuels engagement, strengthens networks, sharpens leadership skills, and builds a culture of excellence across our national community. Participation is open to registered individual members and chapters in good standing, ensuring that every achievement contributes to a stronger and more connected diaspora network.

How To Be Recognized

Core Pillars

At the heart of the program is our Chapter Point System based on a structured and transparent framework that tracks and rewards meaningful engagement across NAfSA’s core pillars:

  • Member & Chapter Development
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Career & Professional Advancement
  • Transition (Educational & Location) Support
  • Community Service & Social Impact

Earning Points

Chapters earn points by submitting verifiable activities such as hosting events, participating in national initiatives, collaborating with/impacting another chapter, engaging in service work, and growing membership.

  • Recognition is normalized so both large and small chapters have a fair opportunity to win.
  • Newer chapters can compete through “Most Improved” and “Rising Star” categories.
  • Regional awards allow more chapters to be celebrated beyond national rankings.

This system fuels healthy competition and collaboration, creating multiple moments of recognition throughout the year.
